The club had a good turn out at Richard's today. I got there about 8:00 and adjusted the pH of Richard's sparge water. Richard has hard water and it took 22 ml of lactic acid to get it to 5.2. I will probably buy a gallon of phosphoric acid ($40) because I don't like adding this much lactic acid to a light beer.
Dean, Larry, Donnie (and a brewing friend) and Ira showed up before I had to leave at 10:30 (I may have missed someone). We modified Eric's recipe somewhat to make it an Irish Red. I wish I could have stayed longer, but the wort tasted great.

OK, guys, in case you didn't hear, the Red turned out to be a 7.3% beer so its bigger than we expected but we expect it to be very tasty.
Since we were expecting to make 2 beers on July 23, we crushed enough grain for 2 beers, but we only had one system. Since the grain was already crushed, Richard went ahead and made the Rye Porter by himself last Friday. It is also resting nicely.
We can mix and match either style for the Lousiana Beer Festival and for the Christmas party, but the beers are done.
Now when we decided to make 2 beers, the deal was that we were going to make 10 gallons for the club and the brewers that provided the systems were going to get the other 5 gallons each. Not only did Richard provide the systems, he provided all the adjunct grains, all the hops and all the yeast. The bottom line is that I think Richard is entitled to 10 gallons of beer. Since Dean, Larry, Donnie and Bob showed up to help brew, I think those individuals are entitled to split the rest of the uncrushed club grain. There is about 20 pounds, maybe a little bit more. Dean was reimbursed the grain he was owed from National Homebrewers Day. Its up to them whether or not they want to split it up or brew together.
