I spent the last hour looking up rules for the Old Ale competition, and the last 30 minutes writing this letter before I was kicked off. So if you see I have updated the following several times, it is to make sure I don't have to repeat this message.
Several of us - as a club - got together and brewed about 10 gallons of Old Ale, using three systems for the 1st running. This was intended to provide club entrees for the KGB's one style competition.
Entrees require 3 bottles, must have a recipe (I'll help on the beer before you added additional tastes), and must be received by Friday, May 6 (or Saturday at St. Arnolds between 12:00 and 2:00). Judging will be at St Arnolds on May 15, followed by an awards celebration (food & Beer) at St. Arnolds.
We need to talk about how we get the entrees to Houston. Eric mentioned that at the April meeting we evaluate 1 bottle of each beer: a great idea.
Last year the competition had 70 entrees; I doubt the 1st round of the National competition had that many entrees in a single category, so this is not the best competition to enter. The large number of entrees was likely due to clubs in the Houston area wanting there club to win the trophy awarded to the club with the most 2nd round winners (and a half barrel of a St Arnolds beer); maybe we can compete, but there are a lot of award winning brewers from the Houston clubs.
The winning brewer will receive a 6 pack made from his recipe (Grand Reserve ?) and an $80 gift certificate, 2nd and 3rd place winners get gift certificates for $40 & $20 respectively.
I also looked up Southern Star and found no mention of them giving out wort on NHB day, so we should tentatively set a big beer brewin on May 7. I would like to see a big turn-out and maybe repeat what we did last year, with the club providing most of the base grain for brewers.
We can talk more at the next meeting at my house.
