Doug: We agreed last night to brew a brown ale at the next brew-in. There are three very different types of brown ale. English brown ales are distinquished between the southern style (mild and sweet, with no hop aroma) and the northern style (a hoppier style, paler in color like NewCastle). A variation of the southern style uses more chocolate malt and is often referred to as Nut Brown Ale (Samuel Smiths). The third option is a "Texas" or American Brown Ale, higher in alcohol and hops (American, not British) hops. The choice is yours, but I would prefer the southern or the American.
