Attached is the eulogy that I delivered at the funeral on behalf of myself and the members of the homebrew club.
George 'Mikey Hebert
1954-2007
George Michael Hebert or as I and other friends called him, Mikey.
Mikey was a lovable free spirit. He was loved by his family and his
friends. His passions were music and of course good beer but his love
was his family and most importantly Shirley. Shirley mentioned the
other nite that Mikey called her, Jeannie, playfully telling her he was the
master and she was his Jeannie.
I think it can be said that Mikey did get his three wishes granted. Those
are wishes that all of us would hope to have fulfilled. The love of a
good woman, the lasting friendships of all the people he would know in
life and fond and happy memories of his journey through life.
Mikey was a proverbial ‘open book’. There was no conniving,
subterfuge, or malice towards anyone. That just was wasn’t Mikey. He
said what he thought and did not condemn anyone for what they
thought.
Mikey had a good heart. He was there when his friends needed help, and
that’s why his friends were there when he needed help.
He told me one time he was concerned that he couldn’t give Shirley
everything he felt she deserved in life. I just told him to give her his
heart and she would be happy. But that just wasn’t enough for Mikey.
He wanted to make their home her dream home and he wanted her to
have a dream car.
We will remember Mikey and he will never be forgotten. He will be
remembered in many ways; as that lovable rascal, as a loyal friend, as a
caring and devoted dad and paw paw, and as a loving companion.
I try to remind myself, especially on these solemn occasions, that our
existence in this world is so very brief. We leave behind the memories
of those we cherished and those that cherished us. Mikey, thank you for
letting us know you. You have enriched our lives and I pray that in
some way we have enriched yours.
