Mark the Transporter and I helped with the KGB Big Batch beer Competition today Sunday June 4th at St. Arnolds.
I was asked to judge, but I wanted to Steward the first time. It was Great, I just sat at the table with 3 judges. I marked the cups, poured the beer and drank and discussed the beer with the judges. I learned a lot about beer tastes, off flavors and judging.
I will be helping with the judging at the Lunar RendezBrew round one on July 8th. I will probably judge this time if they need me. I do encourage more members to join in.

Mark, I am still a little confused about the second round that you help with. They did not score the beers and they did not need a Best of Show, since there was only one category. What what the purpose of that 2nd round? Was it for 1st, 2nd & 3rd? If so, what were the scores for from the first round?

Howdy, east coasters! Transporting Mark is correct. The 2nd round is there to winnow the entries down to a respectable number for the Best of Show (BOS) round. At St. Arnold, there just isn't enough time in a Sunday to have the judges do a second set of score sheets for each beer in round two. There was a lot of discussion about whether we should require a certain number of beers to be passed from round 1 and Has-Been Czar Donald decided (for reasons I'd better let him put into words), that we should insist that two beers be passed on from round one. He knew full well that there might be bad beers going on, but -- what with the subjective nature of judging -- beer #2 from one flight might end up being liked more than beer #1 from another flight in the second round. Anyway, he can clarify this where I've misstated him, but that's my recollection of it. Y'all know where to find him. ;D
