I regularly brew with Doug and recently with Richard and Eric in their system. I have been concerned if I payed my share, since we usually split only ingredients cost. At the Fall brewin, I traded a full propane tank for an empty to try to pay Doug back for brewing many beers with him. Below is a calculation of the cost to brew in a system.
Heating 10 gallons of water in hot water tank to 180F 10,000 BTU Heating 6 gallons of water in Mash tun to 180F 6.000 BTU Heating 12 gallons of wort from 100F to boiling and boiling off 1 gallon 12.000 BTU Total energy requirement 28,000 Btu
Propane 20,000 btu/lb Propane at 40% burner efficiency 3.5 lbs
If you buy at Walmart or groceries at $16.00 for refill, you will pay $3.30 to brew for gas ( how does these calculations compare with getting 5 10 gallon brews per tank?)
