STONE'D FOR SIX DAYS
What: Unlike other vertical tastings, with small, side-by-side comparisons of different vintages of a single beer, this event will highlight one vintage each night. The beers will be served in full pints for probably $6 to $8 apiece.
The beer: Stone Brewing Co. of Escondido, Calif. (near San Diego), is one of the nation's most prominent and respected craft breweries. This event will feature Imperial Russian Stout brewed between 2005 and 2009.
When: Feb. 15-20, with a different keg being tapped each night at 7 p.m.
How it works: The tastings will alternate between the Flying Saucer downtown and Petrol Station in the Oak Forest neighborhood.
Get a punchcard the first night and get it punched with each purchase. Those who make it all six nights will be rewarded with a Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine specialty glass.
Souvenir T-shirts also will be available.
The nightly schedule goes like this:
Monday, Feb. 15: The Flying Saucer, 705 Main, will feature the 2009 Stone Imperial Russian Stout.
Tuesday, Feb. 16: Petrol Station, 985 Wakefield, will have the 2008 stout.
Wednesday, Feb. 17: The Saucer will tap a rare keg of 2008 bourbon-barrel-aged stout. (It's worth noting that a keg contains no more than 128 pint servings.)
Thursday, Feb. 18: Petrol will have the 2007 vintage in addition to such other special offerings as a cask-conditioned Phoenixx Double ESB from Blanco brewer Real Ale and the Stone Cali-Belgique IPA.
Friday, Feb. 19: The Saucer will feature the 2006 Imperial Russian Stout. (Koch, the Stone CEO, notes that these older kegs are extremely rare.)
Saturday, Feb. 20: Petrol hosts a closing-night party with the 2005 vintage as the guest of honor. There also will be a special keg of Southern Star Buried Hatchet stout infused with Petrol's house-ground coffee. Local funk band 2 Dollar Sound will play.
